A Historic Legacy
The site of The Ideal Apartments carries a rich history dating back to 1907. Originally, it was home to the Joseph Dottl Blacksmith Shop. Over time, Joseph Dottl and his son, Norbert, transitioned the business into an auto body repair shop, which later became known as the Ideal Body.
For over 105 years, Ideal Body Co. remained a family-owned and operated business, serving Madison until its closure in December 2012. To honor this legacy, elements from the original Ideal Body building have been thoughtfully incorporated into the design of The Ideal Apartments. The fireplace front, crafted from hammered metal, pays tribute to the site’s blacksmithing heritage. Additionally, brickwork from the original building and metal pylons from the garage entrance of the body shop have been preserved and integrated into the structure, maintaining a connection to its storied past.
The name The Ideal serves as a tribute to this long-standing Madison landmark, reflecting its legacy of craftsmanship and resilience in the community.
